Welcome to the Biology 110 website. Here some information to help you get started:
Do I need to buy the textbook?
While different people have different study habits, it is important to know that you have all of the resources you need to succeed. The official textbook for this course is Campbell's Biology. I have posted a free online supplementary textbook and, while my lectures will draw most of the material from this text, the examinations are based on the material in Campbell.
- The chapters that we will be covering in the supplementary textbook can be downloaded here. If you have good eyesight, you can save money by printing two pages per sheet of paper.
- The official textbook is available from the college bookstore or other sources. Used version of the textbook are also available from numerous sources.
What should I bring to class?
Students are expected to have their own supplies: Pen and pencil, eraser, calculator, notebook. You will not be able to share ANYTHING or use your mobile phone (No, it is not a calculator) during the quizzes, tests or exams. It is wise to bring back-up pens/pencils to all exams and to have the resources you need to learn.
What happens if I wake in the morning and feel too sick to come to class?
You need to get medical documentation. Find a clinic or visit the campus nurse. If you need advice in finding a clinic, you can access a medical help line by dialing 8-1-1 on any phone. Don't worry, this is not an emergency line. Notify the instructor as soon as you can by filling out this form.

Description
Quizzes and Pre-midterm – Quiz and pre-midterm dates are listed on course schedule and the quiz will start promptly at the beginning of class.
Pre-Lab Quizzes – Prior to each lab, students will be provided a series of questions. These questions will be tested at the beginning of each lab and will be credited to lab report/quiz grade and is worth as much as the lab report (see Biology 110 Lab Manual). The lab door will be locked for the duration of the short quiz, and if you are late you will not be able to write the quiz, and you will lose the grade. Don’t be late and do not knock on a locked door.
Lab Reports – Lab reports must be typed and stapled and handed in promptly at the beginning of the next lab class. Lab reports that are not handed in immediately at the start of the lab will be given an automatic grade of zero (see lab manual).
Attendance and Academic Integrity
Columbia College Policy on Lab Component - All students are expected to attend every scheduled lab. Failure to attend even a single lab will result in an automatic fail in the course. Students who miss a lab may (at the Instructor’s discretion) be accommodated if they provide sufficient documentation (i.e. a Doctor’s note). If you find that you are too ill to participate, you should immediately go to a medical clinic to obtain this documentation, the medical note should explicitly state that you are unfit to attend class, and you should email the Instructor so that arrangements can be made to accommodate you. Students must pass (i.e. 10 / 20%) the lab component of Biology 110 in order to pass the course. Students who fail the lab will receive a failing grade in the course, regardless of their academic standing in lecture.
Students who cannot attend class because of religious or other cultural observances must provide a list of those dates within 14 days from the start of the term.
Academic Integrity – Students are expected to behave in a professional and respectful manner at all times. Any form of abuse against the Instructor or fellow students will be met with immediate expulsion from the classroom and possible further academic or legal action. Students who disrupt class activities will be asked to leave and, failing this, may be removed by building security and/or officers of the law.
Students are expected to review the Columbia College Calendar (page 32) and the College’s “Cheating and Plagiarism Policy and Protocols” available from Student Services.

Tests and Exams
- Students are permitted two pens and two pencils, and an eraser. Electronic devices of all kinds and other belongings must be placed at the front of the room. College Policy states that the presence of an electronic device, even in your pocket, constitutes an act of cheating.
- Students who wear peaked caps or other clothing that may conceal notes may, within reason, be asked to remove the article.
- Do not look around, communicate with other students or borrow writing materials from other students. If you need help, as the Instructor.
- Cover your exam. If cheating is suspected, all individuals involved may be penalized.
- Tests and exams will have assigned seating and the exams will be altered so that the person seated next to you will not have the same exam.
- Plagiarism involves copying another person’s words and representing it as your own. Plagiarism is illegal and is not tolerated, under College Policy.
- Plagiarism does not have to be intentional to be an offense. For example, using a memorized textbook definition constitutes plagiarism and it is not an acceptable defense to say that you did not know that this practice was wrong.
